How Does the Fill Angle Affect Cooling Tower Water Flow

How Does the Fill Angle Affect Cooling Tower Water Flow?

The angle of corrugated cooling tower fill affects the direction and distribution of water as it moves through the fill. It also forms part of the overall flow path for air and water inside the tower.

5.5° Angle in Cross Flow Fill

Our Cross Flow Cooling Tower Fill uses a 5.5° structural angle. Combined with an 18mm pitch, it creates defined passages for circulating water and airflow through the fill pack.

When selecting Cooling tower packing, the corrugated structure should be evaluated as a complete system rather than by looking at the surface angle alone.

Why the Angle Matters

The fill angle influences how water travels across the corrugated surface. A consistent angle helps maintain predictable flow paths and supports continuous air-water contact throughout the fill pack.

The actual water flow also depends on the interaction between the corrugation pattern, pitch, fill arrangement, and tower airflow. This is why different Cooling tower fills may use different geometric configurations for specific tower applications.

It Is Not an Independent Parameter

Changing the angle alone does not determine cooling performance. The fill geometry must be considered together with pitch, thickness, water loading, airflow, material, and tower design.

A suitable combination of these parameters helps maintain the intended water distribution and airflow resistance while providing sufficient air-water contact inside the fill.

Product Configuration

  • Width: 1010mm
  • Length: 2500mm
  • Thickness: Customizable
  • Pitch: 18mm
  • Angle: 5.5°
  • Material: PVC, CPVC, PP

Why Fill Width Also Matters

Fill geometry cannot be separated from the dimensions of the tower installation. The width of the fill pack should match the available space and support arrangement so that the designed water and airflow paths can be maintained.

For cross-flow tower applications, a suitable Width Cross-flow Fill can be selected according to the required tower dimensions and installation configuration.

Evaluate the Complete Fill Structure

When a project requires replacement or a new fill configuration, the angle should not be selected in isolation. The complete fill structure, including pitch, thickness, width, material, water loading, airflow, and tower arrangement, should be evaluated together.

This approach helps ensure that the selected cooling tower fill works with the actual operating conditions instead of relying on a single specification to determine performance.
